The latest attempt by the Boko Haram Islamists to capture another Borno town strategic to their planned advance to Maiduguri has suffered a set back as the Nigerian Army Friday said it has  inflicted a heavy defeat on them in Konduga, which is 35km to the State Capital.

According to the statement signed  by  Col. Timothy Atingha for the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), the bid of  terrorists  to overrun the town was met with a fierce response from the troops of the Nigerian Armed forces.

“At about 5.30 am today, Boko Haram terrorists launched a massive attack on Konduga town, about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri”, Atingha said.
After about three hours of fierce fighting, he added, Nigerian troops routed the Boko Haram fighting force of over a 100 terrorists.
He said that further to the staggering loss of men, Boko Haram also suffered extensive losses in equipment.

Specifically, he noted, three Hilux and one Buffalo vehicles with mounted Anti-aircraft guns, three General Purpose Machine guns, over 30 AK 47 rifles and two global positioning systems have been recovered.
